Also:

"I don't care, it isn't a religion." ...Is that a thing?

Great video Ankit, thanks for sharing. These guys did a great job illustrating the importance of technology and how it leads to better data for the math side of things and the logic people used to come up with ways to find things out mathematically was ingenious. I came out of watching it with a better appreciation for just how difficult it was to create a model for the solar system that Chi didn't give me. Historical fiction being fast and loose with the history aspect is a valid and common complaint for the genre, doubly so if its history and science. Since the author was clearly presenting the story as being somewhat accurate to the scientific process and attitudes towards it that people of the time period had than it should be criticized with that standard in mind and the people of MAL plugging their ears and going "nanana I can't hear you" won't change that, especially considering just how gentle a criticism this was.

The replies are funny, idk what to tell you.

I understand where you're coming from & sorry you're getting dunked on over it, but this is very much the "wow cool robot" meme. This sort of thing has a tendency to get under my skin too with historical fiction, but you're missing the forest for the trees. It's a thematic work, not an accurate one.

With that in mind:

" " (29)

In all seriousness, again, this is about the thematic reading of the series.

There were plenty of serious responses to OP's question. You can certainly have the discussion you're having, but as multiple people pointed out, this series has not been subtle in reminding us that it is not accurate to our real world.

It reflects certain real-world sentiments, ideals, movements(🥁) - even ethnic groups - and so on, but it does not claim, nor seek, to represent our real world historical, scientific, or socio-cultural development.

This thread came across to me as playful, for all that I do think it's easy to feel like people are ganging up on OP. I don't think anyone was being cruel here & multiple people did, in fact, participate in constructive discussion - which is much more than I can say for a LOT of threads on MAL.

Your comment was the kindest & the first in which anyone actually acknowledged the video OP linked. I do think that's overdue.

While, yes, I think the tone was playful, I also think a lotta the people who replied here ought to consider how they might feel a sense of anxiety receiving the sort of activity this thread has had in response to a post of theirs, whatever it might be. Being on the receiving end of this probably didn't feel like being in on the game. 🤷 Yeah, OP asked for criticism(bees) & got bees. Doesn't make it fun.

Circling back, they still got legitimate responses &, crucially, a sort of consensus with regards to feeling out how the majority of us feel about this.

Ok this is a media issue.

1. This is an animation not a period film.
2. The creators are guessing no one living has experienced this.
3. Creators make a choice to tell the story that want to with the information that they have.
4. Anything produced via film or video still is not the real thing.
5. We the audience make the choice to believe and accept the information or not.

I can appreciate what the creators were trying to do, however there are a lot of viewpoints to consider.

An example why wouldn't the church think that Heliocentric theory proves the glory of god?

I am sure we could dig apart everything missing from the series but at the end of the day does the lack of factual information keep you from enjoying the series?

Even a show like Kusuriya no Hitorigoto miss some historical information and Maomao's detail in solving the issue.
For me I feel blessed that shows like this are being produced instead of the age marked swarm of product that we normally see.

Genuinely love this response right here. This is what forums are for.

I think quite a few good points have actually been raised within this thread &, frankly, the pot-shots have helped to keep it active enough that the discussion has gotten the sincere attention that it has.

Ultimately, this series is designed to make us think. It's centred around a fairly simple central theme: We, the audience, are encouraged to reflect on our own biases.
We can either be hindered by this or enjoy the ride.

Side note:

These are such tantalising suggestions & are great examples of the appeal of this series.

The church was never trying to uphold truth it was trying to maintain it's power. Being shown as wrong would be a blow to them in being proven as givers of knowledge and leadership and call into question the religion itself.

Anyway, I get what you mean but is it necessary to approach every historical show with that mindset? Sounds tiring.

I don't really care about *historical* accuracy, but as a Polish person, the amount of egregious grammar errors in writing is horrible and hurts me, notably in the letter kid Jolenta wrote to her dad in a flashback Nowak had when he learned she's "dead"

Also why did they name her JolEnta instead of JolAnta? The one with A is a common name, I needed to google JolEnta and only found a 14th century Hungarian queen...

----

Completely diverges from thread, but just a fun thought experiment

> NOTE: if you are watching it just for fun, please ignore this section.

The most important thing anime surfaces and what everyone is also reciprocating in this thread, is the grit of the people and the extent to which they go when they believe in their ideas irrespective of the consequences they face. I know everyone is with protagonist, because from our real world, we know the truth and we have created a bias that all the things MC are doing is correct. But let's forget that it's a world inspired(with fiction added) from our history and is a complete fictional world.

  • In this world, since church already had proven the helio-centricism model( because of sun's size), what if they had shared/propagated this knowledge in some country, and eventually people like Oczy and many others lost faith in God, lead to depression && chaos since it fundamentally challenged the entity they believed in etc. And now, they are restricting this info to avoid their county being doomed?
  • In above scenario, would the church be right in their action? and what others characters are doing is pure rebellion against the society?
  • one other question which needs to be explored, is how much right a citizen should have on the information, if the information can/had lead countries to be engulfed in riots / war etc?

Lastly, don't spend much time on above thought experiement as well, since this thread is not about philosophy either :XD
